Active Debate: Early Avian Evolution and the Dinosaur-Bird Transition

Whether early birds like Limenavis were capable of flight or gliders is debated. The evolution of flight in early birds — and the transition from dinosaurs to birds — is key to understanding avian origins.

What We Still Do Not Know About Limenavis

  • Complete skeletal morphology: Partial specimen known.
  • Diet: Likely carnivorous/insectivorous.
  • Flight capability: Debate ongoing.
  • Social behavior: No direct evidence.

In Depth

Limenavis is a genus of bird that lived in South America during the late Cretaceous. Limenavis means ‘threshold bird’ and this is a reference as to how this genus came pretty much as close as it could to crossing the threshold of being a modern bird, without actually being one.
