Zby: Research Database
Titanosauria (Sauropoda) · Late Cretaceous (~70–68 MYA) · Europe — Portugal (Lourinhã Formation)
Research Note: Zby was a titanosaurian sauropod from the Late Cretaceous of Portugal — one of the few named titanosaurs from Europe. As a member of the Titanosauria, it provides data on European Cretaceous dinosaur faunas and titanosaur biogeography.

Active Debate: European Titanosaur Biogeography and the K-Pg Extinction of Dinosaurs in Europe
Whether European titanosaurs like Zby were endemic survivors or part of a broader Eurasian titanosaur fauna is debated.
The extinction of dinosaurs in Europe — and whether European dinosaurs were affected differently than those in North America or Asia — is a question of ongoing research.
What We Still Do Not Know About Zby
- Complete skeletal morphology: Partial specimens known.
- Body mass: Estimated.
- Social behavior: No direct evidence.
- Armor: Unknown.
In Depth
Not a lot is known about Zby, other than it was a eusauropod dinosaur that seems to have featured similarities with the genus Turiasaurus from Spain, which may also be the largest sauropod dinosaur known from Europe. Zby might sound like a strange name for an animal, but this dinosaur was actually named in honour of Georges Zbyszewski who is noted for his work in the fields of palaeontology and geology.
Other sauropods from the same formation as Zby include Lourinhasaurus, Lusotitan and Dinheirosaurus. Other kinds of dinosaurs include the armoured Dracopelta, stegosaurs such as Stegosaurus, Dacentrurus and Miragaia, as well as predatory theropods such as Torvosaurus, Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus and Lourinhanosaurus.
