Active Debate: Troodontid Relationships and the Origin of Birds
Whether Sinovenator is basal or derived within Troodontidae is debated. The evolution of troodontids in the Early Cretaceous — and their relationships to early birds — is key to understanding theropod evolution.
What We Still Do Not Know About Sinovenator
- Complete skeletal morphology: Well-known.
- Diet: Carnivore/omnivore.
- Social behavior: No direct evidence.
- Relationships: Partially understood.
In Depth
Hailing from China’s world famous Yixian Formation, Sinovenator was a fairly small genus of troodontid dinosaur. Due to the small size, Sinovenator is perceived to have been a predator of smaller animals such as lizards and mammals.
