       Known from a partial skull initially thought‭ ‬to belong to the Procynosuchus‭ ‬genus,‭ ‬Abdalodon was defined as a distinct genus in‭ ‬2016.‭ ‬Abdalodon was named in honour of palaeontologist Fernando Abdala,‭ ‬in recognition of their work on cynodonts.
