Species: A. burolleti (type).

Time period: Serravallian to Messinian of the Miocene.

Afrocyon was one of the mid/late Miocene bear dogs. It may have lived alongside others such as Agnotherium, but so far the remains of Afrocyon are dated to a point after the last known remains of Agnotherium which might suggest that Afrocyon replaced this other genus.
